DESIGN WITH NATURE – The Role of Native Flora in Biodiversity Conservation 

Speakers Ar. Shyamkumar Puravankara –  Principal Architect and Founder of Forms and Spaces, Kasaragod, and Co-founder of Myristika, Environmental Services.

This session explores how designing with native flora can strengthen biodiversity, restore ecological balance, and build resilient landscapes that respond to local climate and cultural contexts. Through real-world insights and grounded practices, the discussion will highlight the role of landscape architects in shaping environmentally responsible and future-ready spaces.

The session features Ar. Shyamkumar Purvankara, an architect known for his cost-effective, eco-responsive design approach and deep engagement with nature as a citizen scientist. Moderated by Landscape Architect Dr. Anju John, the webinar will include an interactive exchange of ideas, encouraging participants to reflect on integrating native species into design processes and everyday practice. Open to all, the session invites a diverse audience to engage, learn, and contribute to a more ecologically conscious design discourse.

Intro or info about the event – A talk session was organised at Marian College of Architecture and Planning, featuring Rajalakshmi Iyer, a leading landscape architect from Singapore. As part of the programme, landscape architects and designers were also invited to present their works in a curated exhibition celebrating contemporary landscape practice and ecological thinking.

Following this, a strong model of youth-led civic action was demonstrated through the ‘M-YUVA (M-Youth) Clean Beach Drive’ at Shanghumughom Beach, organised by Marian College of Architecture and Planning, Marian Edu City, Kazhakuttam, Thiruvananthapuram, in association with the ISOLA Kerala Chapter. The initiative witnessed the active participation of around 200 students and members of the public. Alongside systematic beach clean-up activities, an awareness-driven art installation was created using waste materials collected from the beach, highlighting the environmental impact of human neglect on coastal spaces. The installation, led by noted artist Shanoj P. C., reflected the stark reality of marine litter. The event concluded with a collective environmental pledge taken by the students.

WALK & TALK - VISIT TO NATIONAL ROSE GARDEN NURSERY.

Title of the event – VISIT TO NATIONAL ROSE GARDEN NURSERY.

Intro or info about the eventA walk was conducted at National Rose Garden Nursery, Founded in 1980, located in Mannuthy, Thrissur, the hub of agricultural activities and research, to provide participants with hands-on exposure to a wide variety of plants and their landscape applications. The interactive visit offered an opportunity to observe different plant species, understand their growth habits, and learn about the conditions required for their healthy development. Discussions focused on plant care, soil and sunlight requirements, watering practices, and suitable uses of plants in landscape design. The session helped deepen participants’ practical knowledge of plant selection and maintenance for sustainable and well-adapted landscapes.

CULTURAL IMMERSION CRUISE AND WORKSHOP - MANNU WORKSHOP” ON KETTUVALLAM

Intro or info about the eventA houseboat-based workshop exploring the natural and cultural landscapes of the Ashtamudi wetlands in Kollam. The program featured a six-hour journey through the backwaters, lagoons, and canals of Munroe Island, a cluster of eight islands, offering participants an immersive experience of the region’s unique ecosystem. Activities included mangrove plantation initiatives and interactions with local communities to understand the livelihoods dependent on the backwaters. The initiative also included collaboration in organizing an introductory terracotta jewellery workshop with Ar. Meera.

Intro or info about the eventThis tropical walk explored the story and evolution of Greenara, guided by its founder and landscapist Musthafa P. A.. The walk offered participants an opportunity to experience the richness, vitality, and diversity of a thriving tropical landscape that had been carefully nurtured over time. Visitors were introduced to a wide variety of plants and trees while learning about the vision, knowledge, and patience involved in transforming what was once barren land into a flourishing green environment. Through conversations and observations during the walk, participants gained insights into plant selection, ecological relationships, and the long-term stewardship required to sustain a vibrant tropical landscape.
