The Practice of Landscape Architecture in modern India has seen its share of pioneers, torchbearers and emerging talent. Their body of work- individually and collectively- represents the growing concerns and emerging vocabularies of landscapes in theory, art, design and pedagogy. ISOLA has instituted an Award for Excellence and Lifetime Contribution in order to celebrate and mark their contributions for posterity. ISOLA is honoured to have such stalwarts and pioneers in their midst.

Awards
ISOLA APPRECIATION AWARD (NON-DESIGN)
The ISOLA APPRECIATION AWARD (non-design) is an award that the Indian Society of Landscape Architects (ISOLA) bestows upon an ISOLA member in good standing in recognition of work done in non-design fields that significantly contribute towards the profession of landscape architecture in India. The awardee for this category is identified through a process of nomination and jury selection.
Nomination Process
The nomination should be supported by at least 5 ISOLA fellow members in good standing.
The nomination form should include:
- “A description of the nominee’s qualifications and background”.
- “A brief summary of the reason for which this nomination is being made (500-800 words)”.
The member deemed deserving of the appreciation award may have made a significant contribution in any of the following fields:
- “Academia”
- “Graphic Design”
- “Landscape Journalism”
- “Landscape research”
- “In any other area which the jury may consider deserving of the award”

Awards
The Landmark Award
Eligibility
Local organizations, public officials, civic & historic preservation organizations and interested individuals may submit a project for this award. The entrant for this award may or may not be an ISOLA member, however, the project should have been designed in India. The jury members may choose to visit the project site as a part of the project assessment for the award.
Members of Jury, their firms, organisations, agencies, their employees or employers they represent, are not eligible to participate in the awards. ISOLA retains the right to disqualify any entry that presents a conflict of interest.
Project Entries
Outstanding examples of public spaces including those within institutions, industry or townships whose landscape is demonstrably seen to have played a dominant role in establishing the character and identity of the place. It is mandatory to submit complete details of all stakeholders associated with the project, i.e. Landscape architect, Owners, Persons currently Managing / Operating the Project, etc.
Criteria
The jury shall consider the project’s sustained value to the community it serves and the continued relevance of the project’s design expression. The Award Jury shall select only one project for the award and the award shall be jointly given to the organization, individuals and the designer/design office.
The General Design Award
Eligibility
Only Fellow, Associate or Graduate members of ISOLA in good standing are eligible to participate. Members of Jury, their firms, organisations, agencies, their employees or employers they represent, are not eligible to participate in the awards. ISOLA retains the right to disqualify any entry that presents a conflict of interest.
Project Entries
Public, institutional or private landscapes including residential landscapes, historical landscape projects, landscape design for infrastructure projects etc. can be submitted. The project should be designed and detailed by an ISOLA member/ firm based in India whose principal is an ISOLA member.
Criteria
The jury shall consider the quality of design and execution of work, design context, environmental sensitivity and design value to the client and its setting.
The jury shall select a maximum of two (2) entries for Award of Excellence. Additionally, after due consideration of merit and quality, the jury at its discretion may announce a maximum of three (3) special mentions.
The Unbuilt Design Award
Eligibility
All Fellows, Associates and Graduate members of ISOLA in good standing are eligible to participate. Members of Jury, their firms, organisations, agencies, their employees or employers they represent, are not eligible to participate in the awards. ISOLA retains the right to disqualify any entry that presents a conflict of interest.
Project Entries
Public, institutional or private landscapes including residential landscapes, historical landscape projects, public spaces, landscape design for infrastructure projects etc. can be submitted.
The project should be conceptualised and designed by an ISOLA member / firm based in India whose principal is an ISOLA member.
Criteria
The jury shall consider the innovativeness and clarity of design approach, design concept, context and environmental sensitivity.
The jury shall select a maximum of two (2) entries for Award of Excellence. Additionally, after due consideration of merit and quality, the jury at its discretion may announce a maximum of three (3) special mentions.
The Prakhar Bhagwat Students Award
Eligibility
To participate in the Student Awards, the entrant should have been a student of full time two (2) years Masters Course in Landscape Architecture of an institute recognized by ISOLA and an ISOLA student member for the duration of the course and in good standing at the time of registration. Students of post-graduate Landscape Architecture courses in SAARC countries meeting the project criteria are also eligible to apply against payment of registration fees.
This category recognizes the individual thesis/ final year project done by the student member.
Thesis subjects may have a defined landscape research approach or a design-centric idea that addresses a relevant concern in the realm of landscape architecture.
Judging Criteria
The jury will consider the current-day relevance of the selected topic for Design Dissertation and the methodology adopted for the same. Clarity of approach, contextual response, design ideation and innovation as well as graphical representation of work shall be given due consideration.
The jury shall award a maximum of 2 Awards of Excellence and 3 Commendations in this category for each year.
The GUIDES/MENTORS of the winners shall also be given due recognition in this award.

We are delighted to announce the CALL FOR ENTRIES for the tenth cycle of the ISOLA AWARDS!!!
While this cycle of awards admittedly comes after a long hiatus, it comes with newer categories in the Design Excellence Awards and two separate awards for the Prabhakar Bhagwat Students’ Award for the graduating batches that were missed out due to the global pandemic this is a short cycle of awards and we will be commencing registrations on the 2nd of July 2022 and closing registrations on the 8th of August 2022.
