Annual Conferences

The ISOLA Annual Conference serves as a significant professional forum for exchange of ideas, thoughts and opinions between interdisciplinary professions for the Landscape Architecture fraternity in India. Participation of eminent landscape architects and allied professional experts from India and abroad to discuss and deliberate on global and national issues related to the profession, brings together the single largest gathering of Landscape Architects in India every year. It is an opportunity to connect, engage, network and share professional works, ideologies and direction. And build outreach capacity for the profession by encouraging participation and engagement with public organizations and academic institutions.

The conference is held in a different venue every year, with host cities including Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Ahmedabad and Bhopal.

The Conference Theme

As we confront the challenges of rising waters, fragile ecosystems, extreme climate events, polluted cities, rapid, unplanned development and degraded environments, equitable healthy living environments and continued ecological appropriateness have become critically endangered. The self-healing capacity of natural systems is becoming severely threatened.

The role of the landscape architect transcends boundaries, in integrating intangible values of culture, people, places, land, water, air, context and site-specific conditions into ecologically healthy places to meet presnt and future challenges. Landscape architects play a critical role in synthesizing a range of professional expertise and skills and are best trained to function as members and heads of multi-disciplinary teams that can work on healing the Earth.

We come from a rich tradition of ecological wisdom and landscape aesthetics; a tradition that can help us direct, distinguish and protect the ecological processes that will define the future of the land and our habitats. The state of Kerala is symbolic of the juncture at which landscape architects stand today. Unquestionably God's own country, its ecological heritage is abundant yet finite and fragile. How we will address the ecological processes inherent in this land, and across the world, through practice and academia, in the years to come, will be our lasting legacy as a profession.

The INTENT of the conference is to learn from pioneers, share with our peers, and educate policy makers in the the role that landscape architects in India must play; a role that places us at the forefront of ecological processes and design practice. Ecological democracy combines the forces of ecological science and participatory democracy to design urban landscapes that enable us to act as communities that are resilient rather than imperiled. To understand also how a landscape reacts to a change or disturbance over time on its own or how human intervention can help it, can help us imagine ways of mitigating the effects of future disturbances. It is vital to understand how ecological process is addressed by designers across the globe, as it is to study how Nature adjusts to changes over time.

As few landscape and planning related professionals around the globe have been using ecological principles and processes to guide and inform their work. It is time to learn from them, as well as from the almost-lost cultural practices that for centuries have been using the Earth's natural processes and rhythms as a basis for development and design. It is time to study, design and create landscapes with ecological processes as their primary function.

Known to many as the ‘Indiana Jones of Landscape Restoration’, John. D. Liu (ecosystem restoration researcher, educator and filmmaker), has dedicated his life to sharing real-world examples of once-degraded landscapes newly restored to their original fertile and biodiverse beauty.

Liu, through his work, attempts to prove that when humans work with nature, degraded landscapes can be restored in a matter of years, and economies can be regenerated, putting food security and climate change mitigation within our reach. He believes that humanity must shift from commodifying nature to ‘naturalising’ our economy, in order to survive as a species.

Mr. Boulicot has several years of experience in Decentralized Waste Water Treatment. He has been involved in the implementation of 150 systems in India, Pakistan, Nepal, South Africa, France, Indian Ocean (Mayotte, Maldives).

Previously he was Project Director for Sustainable and Integrated Water Resources Management for Auroville. He has also been involved with the impact study, and concept of management and recycling of the medical water generated by the town of Pondicherry. He is a noted resource person for UNESCO and Indian Government on water resource management

Ganapathy P.G. (PG)

PG is an infrastructure and sustainability professional who brings with him around 25 years of experience in the infrastructure sector spanning water & sanitation, housing & real estate, urban infrastructure and sustainability. Currently, he is Director of Programs at CDD and he drives strategic initiatives, outreach activities and projects in the Water Body rejuvenation domain.

Till recently, he was a Senior Advisor at CDD and Consultant (Special Projects) at Wipro where he program-managed specific sustainability initiatives. In the past, he has been a Senior Advisor and adjunct faculty at IIHS, an Advisor to the Infrastructure Development Corporation of Karnataka (iDecK), an external infrastructure specialist consultant at Mckinsey & Co., Strategic Advisor to JUSCO and consultant to the FIRE Capital Fund. He was the Founder and Director-in-charge at Ecofirst Services, a sustainable design consultancy which offers infrastructure and services design to large buildings and township projects. He has also worked as an individual consultant with the World Bank and the ADB in the urban sector.

Prior to this, PG held senior positions in several corporations: he was the Regional Manager for South Asia in the water division of Black & Veatch (B&V), worked with the Mahindra Group in their real estate and infrastructure division, and worked for 9 years (of which 6 years as a partner) in the start-up phase of Feedback Ventures.

PG is a Mechanical Engineering Graduate from IIT Madras and a PGDBM from IIM Ahmedabad (1993).

Latha Raman Jaigopal

Latha Raman Jaigopal is a founding Partner of Inspiration – a unique ‘nature-friendly architect-builder’ group, who over the last 25 years have grown as a team who cater to a niche clientele who genuinely take the resolve to achieve higher standards of ecology sensitivity in the built environment.

With emphasis on use of cost effective, locally available, energy efficient and eco-friendly building technologies and integration of decentralised infrastructure systems including rain water harvesting, decentralized solid and liquid waste treatment and recycling and relevant applications of renewable energy, Inspiration has been involved in design and construction of over 500 projects ranging from single houses to community housing, institutional campuses, high end Hospitality projects etc spread over a wide range of geographical locations from hills to beaches in India.

As a founding partner and Governing Body Member of CDD (Consortium for DEWATS Dissemination) Society India, Latha has also been instrumental in developing concepts, design detailing and implementation of several DEWATS and DBNS projects. These include the Rejuvenation of Canal Network of Alleppey, Master Plan for rejuvenation of Bhairoba Nalla in Pune, Feasibility studies for DEWATS at town level for Theni Municpality, over 30 DEWATS for the Hospitality and Institutional campuses etc.

Latha is an Architect by training from College of Engineering, Trivandrum.

Karthik Ravichandran

Mr. Karthik Ravichandran has over 5 years’ experience in Decentralised wastewater treatment systems, Faecal sludge Management and Water body rejuvenation. He is currently working as Senior Project Engineer in Consortium for DEWATS Dissemination (CDD) Society, Bangalore

Before embarking on his professional endeavor Mr. Karthik Ravichandran has persued his Masters in Environment Engineering from Anna University, Chennai. He started his carrier as a Site Engineer at GRM constructions and later continued to work as Project Engineer at CDD Society. As a part of Weltwearts program, he was working with Bremen Overseas Research Association (BORDA) and hanseWasser in Germany for over a year on wastewater treatment.

He has vast experience in designing of DEWATS, Faecal sludge treatment plants (FSTP) and water body Rejuvenation Projects (WBR). He has extensively worked on collecting and analyzing the data to understand the actual Ground scenario (by conducting detailed feasibility studies). All the projects that he plans are more inclined towards Nature based approach, which are more a sustainable.

Paul Blanchflower

Director, Auroville Botanical Gardens.

Paul Blanchflower has over twenty years of experience in forestry and landscaping. He arrived in Auroville in 1991 from Scotland after graduating in Forestry and Ecology at Edinburgh University. He founded the Auroville Botanical Gardens in 2000. He is currently engaged in developing the gardens with emphasis on environmental education for the local school children.

The Auroville Botanical gardens was started with a barren 50 Acre piece of land in August 2000. Today the gardens are a thriving centre of activity dedicated to the conservation of the native flora of the area and biodiversity in general. It has a large plant nursery and over 50 landscape projects throughout Peninsular India and offers a variety of services for land management and landscaping, while promoting the use of native species.

Through the income generated from these projects Auroville Botanical Gardens support the running and development of the gardens as well as environmental education programs for the local schools of the area.

Dr. Sunny George

Director, SCMS Water Institute.

Dr. Sunny George, a limnologist of international repute, is the Director of the SCMS Water Institute. He has special expertise in urban water security issues and in devising water management plans for cities. Dr. Sunny George has guided many water policy & audit studies for local self governments in Kerala.

He has been awarded fellowships by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) New Delhi, Belgian Royal Institute of Natural Science, Brussels, Belgium, United Nations University, Tokyo and the United States Department of State, Washington D.C.

He has more than 20 years of experience in research, consultancy and implementation of development projects and has worked in several European Universities and Institutes. In 2012 he was selected by the U.S Government as a member of Indian Water Mission to United States.

Dr. Ratish Menon

Assoc. Professor, SCMS Water Institute.

Dr. Ratish Menon has a PhD in environmental science & engineering from IIT Bombay. At SCMS Water Institute, he works closely with local self governments in Kerala to address their environmental challenges. He was actively involved in the development of water Policy for Kochi city which is the first ever comprehensive policy at local government level in India. He has participated in several city-scale water audits and flow measurement campaigns within India and Germany. His present research interests include the health and sustainability of urban environments.

ISOLA is partnering with the World Green Infrastructure Congress India 2018 taking place on the 4th & 5th June 2018 in Lalit Ashok, Bangalore.

Mr Mohan Rao, will be the invited speaker representing ISOLA.

Objectives of this Initiative:

To promote education in green infrastructure benefits particularly at university levels and trade school levels, to provide skills for the green roof, green wall and landscaping industry that can be expected to develop more widely.
To promote green infrastructure research and extension in soundly-based green infrastructure development.
To publicize the global environmental and cost-saving advantages of green infrastructure, especially those related to reducing climate change problems.

Returning to Singapore for the second time, the 55th IFLA World Congress 2018 will be the largest and most significant event for landscape professionals in the world. Supported by 5 regions – Americas, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific, it sets the stage at the ‘City in a Garden’ for professionals, government bodies and academics to be part of the in-depth discourse on trends, challenges, and business opportunities on a global scale. IFLA World Congress 2018 is the key platform that champions landscape architecture as a major contributor to the development of attractive, liveable, equitable, and sustainable environments of the future through the themes of Biophilic City, Smart Nation, and Future Resilience.
